Port congestion! Reduced capacity! MSC and Maersk suspend multiple services
2024,10,14
The dockworker strike at major ports on the East Coast and Gulf Coast of the United States has come to an end for the time being. Due to the short duration of the strike, the impact is less than originally feared. Nevertheless, the three-day port closure did lead to ship queues, which had a negative impact on the available capacity at the departure point.
Maritime data analysis company Sea-Intelligence said that since it takes some time to clear the backlog of ships and containers, the impact may be closer to a week's capacity loss.
Sea-Intelligence data statistics show that in the 46th week, the capacity from Asia to the East Coast of the United States fell by 17%.
Alan Murphy, CEO of Sea-Intelligence, said: "If ships are stranded on the East Coast of the United States for only three days, it will take a full week to clear the backlog of ships, which means that there will be a capacity reduction of nearly 40% in the short term." Alan Murphy added: "The end of the strike may mean that rates will continue to fall. Therefore, exporters should be prepared for temporary capacity reductions, especially exporters in Asia, Northern Europe and the Mediterranean." Affected by congestion and delays, shipping companies have begun to adjust the schedules of related routes. Shipping giant Maersk also issued an announcement that it is currently facing delays and operational restrictions, which have affected the company's route services from Asia to the East Coast of the United States, resulting in some voyages arriving later than the original schedule.
